Meta Platforms, the parent company of Facebook, Messenger, Instagram, WhatsApp and Meta Horizon has agreed to pay a massive settlement of 725,000,000 USD in order to end a lawsuit filed by Cambridge Analytica against Facebook for giving it access to millions of user information used in targeting voters during Donald Trump's 2016 presidential campaign.
The lawsuit sought to be certified as a class action on behalf of Facebook users, alleging that its privacy breach proved it was both "data broker and surveillance firm" as well as social network. Although Meta denies these claims, they have agreed to pay an extensive settlement amount in order to avoid trial costs and risks as stated on the settlement website.
Eligible users with accounts created between May 24, 2007 and December 22, 2022 are invited to submit claims before August 25, 2023; payout amounts depend on both their claim totals and account duration.
